Big living rooms and master bedrooms in Asaba, GRA Port Harcourt and Yenagoa often have a 2HP AC. Can solar run it? Yes, with a bigger system.
How much power a 2HP AC uses
- Running hard: about 1.5kW to 2kW
- Inverter AC once cool: often about 1kW to 1.3kW on average
- Start-up: a normal AC needs a big surge; an inverter AC starts gently
System guide
| Part | Size for one 2HP inverter AC + home loads |
|---|---|
| Inverter | 8kVA to 10kVA pure sine wave hybrid |
| Panels | About 5kW to 6kW (9 to 10 × 600W) |
| Battery | About 10kWh to 12kWh usable for 8 hours |
Cost guide
This is close to our 10kVA range: roughly ₦5.1M to ₦6.5M with 15kWh of lithium. Smaller batteries cost less, but the AC will not last the night. See 5kVA vs 10kVA.
Ways to cut the cost
- Use an inverter-type AC. Read inverter AC vs normal AC.
- Set it at 24–25°C.
- Run it for part of the night, then use a fan.
- Insulate the ceiling and use thick curtains.
