If you live in Port Harcourt, Warri or Yenagoa, you have seen tubular batteries. They are the big tall ones. Many inverter shops sell them. Now lithium batteries are everywhere too. Which one should you buy?

The short answer

For solar, buy lithium. For a small inverter that only covers short NEPA outages, tubular can still work.

Why tubular dies fast on solar

Solar batteries work every single night. That is hard work.

A tubular battery is happy when it stays full and only gives a little power. When you drain it every night, its plates wear out. If it does not get fully charged the next day, it gets sulphation. That is a hard white layer on the plates. It kills the battery.

In the rainy season in Rivers and Bayelsa, many days are cloudy. So tubular batteries often stay half-full. That makes them die even faster.

Why lithium lasts

Lithium does not mind being half-full. It does not mind daily use. Its BMS (small brain inside) protects it. That is why it can do thousands of cycles.

Simple cost example

Say you need about 4kWh of power each night.

  • Tubular: you need about 8kWh of tubular, because you can only use half. You will likely replace it every 2 years.
  • Lithium: a 5kWh lithium battery gives you that 4kWh and lasts many years.

Over 10 years, tubular means buying again and again. Lithium means buying once.

When tubular can make sense

  • You get long, steady grid supply (8+ hours a day).
  • You only need power for short outages.
  • Your load is small: lights, fans, TV.
  • Your budget is very tight today.

Even then, read inverter only vs full solar first.

Care tips if you already have tubular

  1. Top up with distilled water only. Never tap water.
  2. Keep the battery room cool and airy.
  3. Do not drain below half.
  4. Clean white powder off the terminals.

Upgrading to lithium

Many of our customers in Port Harcourt, Ughelli and Effurun switch from tubular to lithium. See what a gel or tubular to lithium upgrade costs.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a tubular battery last on solar?

About 1.5 to 2.5 years if it is used every night. It can last longer if it is only used for short outages and is kept fully charged.

Is tubular battery good for solar?

It works, but it is not the best for daily solar use. It wears out fast when it is drained every night, and you can only safely use about half of its power.

Can I replace tubular batteries with lithium?

Yes. Many inverters can take lithium if the voltage matches and the inverter has a lithium setting. We check your inverter first.

Why do tubular batteries need water?

Charging splits some of the water in the acid into gas. You must top up with distilled water, or the plates dry out and the battery dies.
