You want cold drinks and safe food when NEPA goes. Should you buy a DC solar fridge or keep a normal fridge on your solar inverter?
What is a DC solar fridge?
It runs on DC power straight from a battery. No inverter in between. That saves some power.
What is a normal (AC) fridge?
It is the fridge you buy in any shop. It runs on 220V AC power. On solar, the inverter turns battery power into AC for it.
Side by side
| DC solar fridge | Normal fridge on inverter | |
|---|---|---|
| Needs inverter | No | Yes (pure sine wave) |
| Power use | Very low | Low to medium |
| Price | Often higher | Wide range |
| Repairs in Port Harcourt | Harder to find | Easy |
| Best for | Small stand-alone setups | Full home or shop systems |
When DC makes sense
- A shop with only a fridge and lights
- A remote site with a small panel and battery
- A farm or riverine site where every watt counts
When a normal fridge makes sense
- You have a full home solar system already.
- You want a big double-door fridge.
- You want easy repairs.
Modern "inverter" fridges (with a variable-speed compressor) use much less power than old ones. They work very well on solar.
Always use pure sine wave
A normal fridge on a modified sine wave inverter can run hot and fail early. Read pure vs modified sine wave.
